D.I.C.E. 2006 : Peter Moore on the future of gaming

Basically talks about the X360 and the new to be launched Windows Vista OS and what will it do for gaming.

"After about 20 minutes, Peter finally got around to the PC gaming portion of the presentation. As you're probably all too aware of, Microsoft has been promising to take PC gaming to the next level for years. Early in the presentation Moore admitted, "We've been a little distracted over the past few years," but that Microsoft is ready to "put the money where their mouth is" when it comes to PC gaming now.

PC game revenue has been dropping since 2002, but has still seen overall growth in the past decade. One reason Moore cited for the dwindling PC market is the lack of industry packaging standards, making for a mess when the average consumer goes into a retail shop to purchase PC games. He said Microsoft wanted to push for better box standards that would be easier to present in the retail space, similar to console DVD cases.

In addition to standard packaging, Moore thinks that broadband penetration and digital distribution will bring PC gaming back to the heights it saw in the late 90s, and push it far beyond what we've ever experienced. Like non-standard PC packaging, Moore cited the lack of cohesive online solutions and standards as a problem in the current PC market. He also mentioned that Microsoft has been developing a standard online service across all formats. As Moore put it, "We're working on it. I can't tell you much more about it, but it is seamless, efficient, and it goes across all platforms." Microsoft has definitely shown they know how to do online right with Xbox Live, so we welcome seeing a similar service for the PC."

So other than STEAM we could have LIVE running on our Vista machines... mmm?

LOL ... the PC market is cracked and only awesome games like BF2 get to make money. It's a strictly try before you buy environment.

What Moore is leaving out is that the quality and originality of PC games is terrible. And .. he is not even thinking of the shareware market, which is having quite an awesome time making good money.

Mebbe somebody should slap him on the head and whisper : Doom was shareware numknuts !

EA had DICE make BF2... then they fired the lot... how much do you want to bet the expansions made by other houses will ridicule the game from its original creators intentions?
