    Thanks again.
Assume on the content side that could download the equivalent of a new release (Retail Value R300) every 3 months or "booster pack" a month?

Considering how expensive ADSL/ISP charges etc already are in this country, I'm loathe to pay much extra - even for 'premium' content.

'Super low latency' etc - we should ALREADY have that as part of our normal package - and I mean for international. Local (well.. to SGS) latency is fine, unless you have to cross a peering link to say, IS.

It's sick that people have to pay for premium unshaped packages to play certain games internationally.

I'm just glad Guild Wars is not a hog and plays nicely across the international links.

-- Anyway, I'm assuming you're approaching this from Telkom?
Perhaps Telkom should be looking at lowering ADSL/ISP costs to international market related levels before they think up new marketing schemes to get more money out of us. -- Then perhaps we would gladly fork out for something like this.

PS: This is not aimed at you Sos.. just a general rant @ telkom.

No Prob TG... not saying ADSL will stay the same as it is today... depends on number of forces (lot of pressure to change).
But in present condition if there was an option like above, would it make sense? Can't work off the "to be" have to work off the "as is" scenario (it's a project as part of MDP course)
If the what if were attractive it could be launched?

The main problem in ZA is that there is a limited number of people who can actually afford ADSL and have use for it. I think right now that number is below 300000. In order to attract more people to ADSL, it must become cheaper, which at some point may not be viable. Also, there must be competition. In Germany (just mentioning it because I have been there ), there is a huge market. While there are only a few companies who actually put the line to your home, there is a lot of resellers, and they have brought the prices down considerably. The result are 6mbit lines without any cap/shaping/portblocking for a song compared to what we pay here. But it would never have gotten there with the increasing number of subscriber,s which is several million there. And of course, they have to do something about this ridiculous capping policy here. Bandwidth is not as expensive as Telkom/Saix want to make us believe.

Few subscribers means high prices. High prices put off potential new subscribers. Cat bites tail.

    Hello, Telkom, anyone home?
It is not the responsibility of a defender to leave the objective unguarded just so his opponent sucks less.

Thanks for feedback !! all comments welcome ... some fair points... the more people who use a service cheaper cost is to individual (based cost shared)... market total in SA is small ...only 4.5 M people with Telephone lines. Many prefer prepaid mobile model... that's why Vodacom and MTN do well... it's one thing to get a line... another to actually pay monthly cost necessary to maintain.
Currently can only get ADSL if you have a line ... so if 10% penetration were target then total ADSL subs only 450K etc. 10% penetration of 3G for Vodacom's 15Mil+ would be 1.5M subs !! shared costs therefore lower.... anyway

Yip, prob would just stick to what we have now, being a student and all it gets tough to fork out on top of ADSL.

Yea i'd also say if i have to pay for any service i can't afford it. Already a bit beyond my means just to keep ADSL line up. I'm also thinking get more ppl in to make it cheaper, and making it cheaper would get more ppl in. The problem is that you need a fulcrum to get the ball rolling. And that could only be telkom brining the price down radically, maybe even running this at a loss for a little while untill enough peoplehave joined so that volume makes their profit. And I just can't see the money hungry Telkom doing that any time soon. BTW it sucks that I have to pay line rental for the phone line on top of the ADSL cost, even though i never use a phone on that line. Can't Telkom give me the line for ADSL only? I'm never going to use a phone here at all, and the previous occupant of the house had already had a phone line installed.

Anyhows I didn't vote in this one or the first one cause I won't be able to pay for any premium service at all.
