I prefer travelling via London to the USA.....I hate the 18 hours 'direct' flights.

I have also for some time tried to make up my mind if the flights via London or Amsterdam is better than the direct ones. Now, I guess I do not have much choice. The main hassle for me is that the trip back always seem to have a 12-ish hour stopover in London, since both flights are basically overnights.

That 5 hour flight from USA to London is a killer, I only manage to get about an hours sleep on the plane....normally I have business in London to take care of as well on the way home....so I dash off to the hotel and crash for the rest of the morning.

I believe there are day flights to SA now...but not from London...either Frankfurt or London

The day flights only seem to be during high season, or maybe it is only certain days.

Huh? I think Schiphol is one of the most organized airports in Europe. You want nightmare, go via Paris CDG one day. I spent 5 hours in Schiphol on a stopover and I almost fell in love with that airport. Everything is easy to find, you can walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes.

Yes, I also never got lost in Schiphol. And the walks are just far enough to get some exercise between flights. It is not like the cross country treks at Heathrow. And I often go to Ireland for work, so tend to have some euros which are easy to spend at Schiphol, while I tend not to have any sterling, so have to use my credit card for everything at Heathrow.

I have not been to CDG in a long time, but have vague memories of chaos from eight years ago.

Schipol just takes soooo long for the luggage to get to you.....it is nice and modern when compared to the mayhem at Heathrow....I fly twice a year to Boston...which is an OK airport.
