Default How to get good equipment early in the game

I stumbled upon this by chance. It is a non-cheating but effective way to get some seriously good armor and weaponry very early in the game. That will make things easier. I will pack that into several spoilers though, just in case...

Where do I get the equipment?

When you get out of prison, you will see the city guards running around. Looks like they wield some good stuff there, don't they?

How do I get the equipment?

All you have to do is somehow break the law. If a guard approaches you, resist arrest and kill him. That's the hard part. When he is dead, hurry up to grab all his equipment, well, at least the armor pieces and the sword.

    Any other advice?

Yeah, sure. You can only choose the 'resist arrest' option with the first guard. Any subsequent arrent attempt will require you to either pay the fine or do the time. I did the time in prison, which cost me a little bit in terms of skills, but afterwards they give you back everything you had before the arrest - including the armor you salvaged. You might also want to pick a more secretive area to do the stunt, like the horse stall on the west side of town (that's where I did it) - the more crowded the area, the more NPCs will turn against you.

Voilá! I haven't played very far yet, so this forum will otherwise have to do without me for now
It is not the responsibility of a defender to leave the objective unguarded just so his opponent sucks less.

    Fankies RN!

Another way of doing this (similar way, but without getting bounty!), is:

Run into the wild and lure a wild animal towards the nearest town.
There should be a guard outside there and he should be willing to attack the critter.
Run behind the guard, as the critter sees the guard and realises that he's the stronger target, immediately going for him rather than you.
If the critter manages to kill the guard, loot the body (its legal! Even though it's sort of graverobbing...) and run inside the town!

    Voilá!

    Important note about ^:

This will NOT work if the monster is not strong enough. these critters scale to you level. However, on level ten, I managed to get a mountain lion to attack me, and it could kill the guard (and I could kill it afterwards), so I'm not quite sure what can and can't kill guards. Save and then experiment!

I got a good sword early on by doing the quest from the guy in the Chorrol tavern. It took me a couple of tries to keep the two sons alive (quick save before the fight), but I succeeded in the end. I used that sword to clear out the hard guys in the first Oblivion gate of the main story easy peazy. Note, I used my fists for the easy guys, because I did not want to level up too fast and hand-to-hand is a secondary for my SpellSword.

Edit: Changed info above. Sorry about the link guys. I did the quests earlier and only now looked up the link to describe what I did. I have changed it to my own description.

grr... please don't always do that, as it defeats the point of the entire point of having this forum (ie, you can look it up on some other site)

This is meant to try and help others with OUR experiences...

Its okay, but generally try and avoid, okies?

Edit: Problem Solved, Fanks intensely, but I'm keeping this post here as a reference for other would-be linkers, so I can grr at them too

    Fanks!

Post Another way to get good stuff!

If ur wanting good stuff (Armor and weapons) just join the fighters guild! When ur in just go to all the fighters guilds in oblivion AND CLEAR THEM OUT its very useful to do this in the beginng because u can get some good stuff! And dont worry its not stealing because u r already in the guild so any armor, weapons, books, potions, etc you can find in the fighters guild is basicly urs just remember u must be part of the fighters guild!

If you don't understand ^, try read v.

If you want reasonably good items early in the game, join the fighter's guild. When you're accepted in, travel to all of the guild halls in the land and take everything of value. Generally, they have Iron Claymores and Warhammers, worth about 60 each. Note: It's NOT stealing, because you are a member and everything effectively belongs to you anyway. Just remember to join before doing this, and take note that if the hand is red, it's stealing regardless of if you're in the guild or not (there are some items belonging to PEOPLE, and not the guild.

To add to what Statics said, you can actually do it with all the guilds... Certain items cannot be taken, but you can make a 'good bit of gold' with all the alchemical apparatus in the mages guilds (selling for 10,25 and 50 each..)

lol i cleaned out most of the mages guilds in my game lol im taking the aparatuses from in front of the person and selling them to her LOL

    SHOULD HAVE BEEN

It was rather amusing, I took most of the items from the mages guild in my character's world. Yes, it was rather amusing, as I took some of the alchemical apparatus from right before a lady member of the mages guild - a merchant, no less - and then sold the items to her. Indeed, it was all rather amusing...

The thing is, you can basically do this first thing after getting out of prison. I haven't even found the guilds yet...
