Since we don’t have a dedicated thread for them. I found this article interesting:

Turn a raspberry pi 2 into a cheap DIY steambox for in-home streaming

http://za.rs-online.com/web/p/processor-microcontroller-development-kits/8968660/ (freakin exchange rate)

Ps. I have had issues with the Pi2 RCA video outputs to an old legacy screen. Any thoughts (excluding sarcasm about replace that screen :stuck_out_tongue:) and have googled like craz-e

Are you positive that the RCA cable is correct?

Oh cool thanks i’ll have a look later.
I just assumed the cable that shipped standard with the Pi2 would have work…

Well if it shipped with the pi then it should work, however check it anyway.

I like pie.

especially if the pi are square :grin:

You pi-boys might like this:

I have the Pi Model B… i think it’s time for an upgrade.

Apparently the RPI3 can be used perfectly as a steam streaming box!
Couch “The crew” anyone ?

Here’s the official Amazon way to do the Pi Alexa Voice Service

https://github.com/amzn/alexa-avs-raspberry-pi

okay, this is hilarious. I managed to remember to take the multi-meter home.
Turned out it was the right cable, the plastic housing that came with from RS didn’t
allow the 4 way connector to go in all the way and video is the pin furthest from the socket inlet. :upside_down:

RS have this little laptop case where you can use a Rpi. The only problem I see is the price. It’s R4583,76 WITHOUT an rpi. You can just go and buy an i3 entry level laptop for 5k then.

http://za.rs-online.com/web/p/processor-microcontroller-development-kits/1025775/

pi-top Kit Contents
•13.3 inch HD LCD Screen with eDP interface with 1366 x 768 resolution
•Smart battery with 10+ hours run time, 2-Wire SMBus V 2.0 interface
•Keyboard (fully programmable) and trackpad
•8 GB SD card with pre-installed pi-top OS
•WiFi dongle
•Power supply
•Acrylic slice
•Image based build manual

It’s amazing what we’re finding to do with the RPi units we have. We’ve got a music server, a print server, plex media centers and a 3d printing hub. Time to stock up on more Pi! :slight_smile:

Recalbox supports Atari 2600, Atari 7800, NES, Game Boy, Game Boy color, Game Boy Advance, Super Nintendo, Famicom Disk System, Master System, Megadrive (Genesis), Gamegear, Game and Watch, Lynx, NeoGeo, NeoGeo Pocket, FBA (subset), iMame4all (subset), PCEngine, Supergrafx, MSX1/2, PSX, Sega Cd, Sega 32X, Sega SG1000, Playstation, ScummVM, Vectrex, VirtualBoy, Wonderswan

Kodi and Recalbox can update in standalone without breaking the dual boot.
Setup was easy, adding roms is tricky at first, using a logitech rumblepad only still tricky cause no popup keyboard and i don’t have a spare USB k/b lying around plus i have a Pie2 so USB ports and all full (wifi,bluetooth,rumblepad,mouse) and sadly kodi doesn’t support rumblepad apparently due to the lack of x.org on JEOS

I want to build a small plex system for the kids rooms. Forking out R2000+ on media players is nonsense. Looking at something like an RPI or something cheaper. It just needs to run plex @ 1080p without transcoding. (via AC wifi)

Plex server or client?

Cheapest plex client - with some kind of remote

Hmm, I already have the model B which is currently just running pi-hole, not sure if it’s fast enough to run rasplex. Will have to test tonight.

If it works on a pi zero that would be amazing as it’s only R80. (excluding IR module and remote)

With this remote maybe? https://www.pishop.co.za/store/wireless-usb-pc-ir-remote-controller?keyword=remote&category_id=0

Okay so i loaded raspex onto my Model B and it works nicely, boots fast, interface is snappy, sign in to plex and uses the tv remote via cec-hdmi!

Only one problem, my library is not showing up. Bleh.
Plex server - 1.5.5.3634

Here’s the logs that I got from rasplex

################################################################################

Overclock mode settings.

default recommended values are: arm_freq | core_freq | sdram_freq | over_voltage

no overclocking : 700 | 250 | 400 | 0

mode ‘Modest’ : 800 | 300 | 400 | 0

mode ‘Medium’ : 900 | 333 | 450 | 2

mode ‘High’ : 950 | 450 | 450 | 6

mode ‘Turbo’ : 1000 | 500 | 600 | 6

arm_freq=950
core_freq=450
sdram_freq=450
over_voltage=4

Set ‘force_turbo=1’ to disable dynamic overclocking and enable overclocking always.

force_turbo=0

If you have any data corruption using Turbo Mode and overclocking

try with this setting uncommented

If this still fails, try to use Medium mode without “over_voltage=2”

If it ultimately keeps failing, forget about this until it gets fixed

Use a more conservative mode that will works fine in any cases:

initial_turbo=30

Make display smaller to stop text spilling off the screen

Note that the overscan settings only affect the splash screen and not Kodi.

If you experience overscan/underscan issues the best solution is to adjust

your TV settings (“full pixel”, “1-1 pixel” etc.). Alternatively, there is a

calibration menu in the Kodi GUI.

disable_overscan=1

Adapt overscan values to your needs

overscan_left=57

overscan_right=59

overscan_top=20

overscan_bottom=20

Uncomment for DVI monitor

hdmi_drive=1

Force HDMI even if unplugged or powered off

hdmi_force_hotplug=1

Doesn’t sent initial active source message.

Avoids bringing CEC (enabled TV) out of standby and channel switch when

rebooting.

hdmi_ignore_cec_init=1

RasPlex looks cool.
So my question, why plex? Isn’t it a paid app vs Kodi which is free?
I know that plex was a partial fork from xbmc ages ago.
I’ve been using Kodi for years and would love to know more about and why “you” chose plex ? Why not Kodi?

Ps. On Kodi Krypton they really improved the web interface and can now buffer via the browser :wolf:
